Abstract

The present study assessed the psychometric properties of the parent version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) in a sample of 798 caregivers of children, 4 to 11 years old, from the Metropolitan Region of Chile. The SDQ (Goodman, 1994) is a 25-items questionnaire that assesses emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents. The results indicated a level of reliability suitable for the total scale, but an unsatisfactory level for the subscales. Regarding the internal structure validity, none of the solutions explored successfully reproduce the original structure proposed by Goodman neither other later proposals. Additionally, differences in terms of the stratification variables were explored, finding that school-aged boys who attend public schools and receive attention from a mental health professional had more psychological difficulties.
